It’s That Time Of Year Once Again This Year

Tuesday, 13 Conclusion 2017

Hi everybody! Once again, it’s time for another xmas mix from The Funny Farm. This year features a little mashup by Your Humble Narrator of Liam Neeson being interviewed for a position playing Santa at a mall with an old Ventures tune; a beautiful a capella gem from the Monkees; and a Beatles christmas song, among other things.

Also too it seems to be somewhat stressful for a metric Cheneyton of people these days. Especially in the greater North American continent what with all the T Rumplings running amok and some of the more radical right wing christian terrorists shooting up things more often. So maybe somebody can decompress and get their minds right to the point that they are ready to embrace The Church of The Afternoon Nap and throw off the shackles of traditional religious fanatacism. Just maybe…

So, for these and so many more reasons, but most importantly because I finally got the frelling thing done again this year, it’s time to provide you once again with the best (cough) in non-traditional non-superstition based holiday musical montages. As always huge props to the master, DJ Riko for showing me the way – please go over to his site and check out his fabulous 2017 offering once he gets it up on his site.

Here’s the track list for the 2017 Xmas MegaMixx:

Pee Wee’s Christmas Special Opening Song – Paul Reubens et al
Liam Neeson v. The Ventures – mall Santa interview / Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
Space Christmas – Shonen Knife
The Monkees – Riu Chiu
What Christmas Measn To Me – Stevie Wonder
Xmas Time of the Year – Green Day
I Believe in Father Christmas – Emerson, Lake, and Palmer
Christmastime Again – Brandon Wilde
White Christmas – Otis Redding
A Very Merry Christmas – Casey Shea
Erotic Christmas (Home For The Holograms) –
The Strangest Christmas Yet – Steve Martin and the Canyon Rangers
I’m Gonna Lasso Santa Claus – The One and Nines
Don’t Believe in Christmas – The Sonics
Santa Forever – Mia Crosby
Christmas Blues – Jimi Hendrix
Players’ Ball – OutKast
Santa Why’d You Do It – Alyssa Reid feat The Heist
I Won’t Be Home For Christmas – Blink 182
You’re a Mean One, Mr Grinch – Lindsey Stirling feat Sabrina Carpenter
The Nutcracka – Davoodi
Carol of the Bells – Trans Siberian Orchestra
Whistle Neath the Mistletoe – Briana Winter
Home For christmas – Kate Bush
Christmas Time (Is Here Again) – The Beatles

This year it was fun to surf for those last few songs that I neede to fiil up the mix, including one that I put together mayself. The Monkees cut was an awesome find as well – I didn’t even know the Monkees put a christmas special together! Once again, this thing takes on a life of its’ own – going back through them I definitely see themes going through them besides the ones I try to put in myself.

I am also adding to the pile of songs that are not family friendly enough for inclusion in the mega mixxes. I am still thinking I might put something together one of these years…

I have also once again done something this year that I have never done before. I’m not even offering any presents this year due to the complete lack of participation last year.

If you wish to comment on this post, or download this or any of the Mega Mixxes, please email me – the directory is behind the Funny Farm Filings Fence and you will need to get the user name / password from me if you didn’t save it last year.

Even More Quick Question(s)

Mid Year’s Day 2017

The pillaging and general mayhem surrounding the Republicant majority running rampant in all levels of government today* has only been ratcheted up since Republicants lost (cough) pallets of cash during their illegal immoral clusterCheney in Iraq. So much so that Perfesser Chaos and his merry band of Republicant commies has caused relative paralysis akin to nervous exhaustion round the Funny Farm for most of the calendar year. I’m also trying to figure out how I’m going to handle whatever shaft I get from the additional tax giveaways to the rich cuts to Medicare included in the latest Republicant attempt to wipe out the achievements of the scary not-completely-white muslimoid socialist who won the presidency with the largest majorities since Ray-Gun and has always been more popular then Orange Juliani on his best day. And of course everything’s just a bit more expensive, work expects just a bit more for a bit less, and guess who decided to call the Funny Farm earlier today?**

Hopefully the second half of the year will be a bit less rancid. Can everyone stop mentioning it so much when Twitterer the Grouch continues to set records for most golf outings and most taxpayer dollars wasted on travel by a pResident? If he’s out on the golf course he’s not rage legislating by fiat and tweeting the security codes to the Pentagon. Also too, it would be nice if Democratic politicians should start treating Republicants as if they are the traitorous hypocritical liars that they have shown themselves to be. Just throw all of the crap that landed at Obama’s feet back at these farging iceholes and paint the Short Fingered Vulgarian as the mafia owned traitor he has shown himself to be.

I’m so old, I remember when Republicants brought their mistresses to Congress and stopped the business of the american government because a sitting president got oral sex from someone who was not his wife. And required him to testify about it under oath. Then, as I continued to get older, I saw the Republicants refuse to allow The Illegally Installed Drunken Cokeheaded Deserter (During Wartime) or his pResident of Vice to testify about 9-11 under oath. And then lie about some additional tax giveaways to the rich sunsetting (cough) tax cuts that would expire in ten years. Then Republicants lied some more and insisted on making their additional tax giveaways to the rich tax cuts permanent. Funny how that worked…

* – just like in the Putsch reign, except with a decade of the Peter Principle at work by the principal architects of the latest Republicant incarnation, who are often the very same people who so disastrously oversaw the last Republicant reign of error…

** – if all the links and trackbacks work, and the people who put that excellent video are still exacting revenge on the IRS scammers, the phone number they used to call me – that they asked me to call back – is (740) 299-8467. I would love to update this post and tell the blogoverse that these phone scammers have been hit yet again.

It’s That Time Of Year Somewhat Earlier Than Normal This Year

Humpday, 9 Betteroff 2016

Hi everybody! This post is coming earlier than usual this year for a plethora of reasons. First and foremost, after last year I had almost half of this year’s mix left over. This one’s been percolating in the back of my mind for a while now. I also have been stressed out to the limits of my endurance at various points in time this year, and now have the great fortune to have come through my own fire. And recovered from the burns.

Also too it seems to be somewhat stressful for a metric Cheneyton of people these days. Especially in the greater North American continent what with all the T Rumplings running amok and some of the more radical right wing christian terrorists shooting up things more often. So maybe somebody can decompress and get their minds right to the point that they are ready to embrace The Church of The Afternoon Nap and throw off the shackles of traditional religious fanaticism. Just maybe…

And some Cubbies ended a drought of over one hundred years and won the last game of the year. In extra innings. So an entire year of baseball, and things come down to the last game possible. And it’s tied at the end of regulation… Congrats to the Chicago Cubs and long suffering Cubs fans all over!

So, for these and so many more reasons, but most importantly because I got the frelling thing done already, it’s time to provide you once again with the best (cough) in non-traditional non-superstition based holiday musical montages. As always huge props to the master, DJ Riko for showing me the way – please go over to his site and check out his fine 2016 offering once he gets it up on his site.

Here’s the track list for the 2016 Xmas MegaMixx:

Bill Murray, Mylie Cyrus, & P Shaffer&Band-Let It Snow
Dan McCaslin-Spirit Of Christmas
Moonglows-Hey Santa Claus
Jars Of Clay-Hibernation Day
Klark Kent-Yo Ho Ho
Liz Phair & Aimee Mann-Ho Ho Ho
Christina Perri-Something About December
Great Lake Swimmers-Hang A String Of Lights
Canned Heat-Christmas Boogie
Chuck Berry-Run Rudolph Run
Yellowcard-Christmas Lights
Marvin Gaye-Purple Snowflakes
Jona Lewie-Stop The Cavalry
Wall Of Voodoo-Shouldn’t Have Given Him A Gun For Christmas
Fall Out Boy-Yule Shoot Yer Eye Out
Fitz and The Tantrums-Santa Stole My Lady
The Futureheads-Christmas Was Better In The 80’s
Andrea Perry-Christmas With Fat Aunt Bette
Julian Casablancas-I Wish It Was Christmas Today
The Killers featuring Ryan Pardey-I Feel It In My Bones
National Lampoon featuring Murray Bros & Gilda Radner-Kung Fu Christmas
Ella Fitzgerald-What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?

This year it was interesting to get a few songs that I have been wanting to finally get to into the mix, including one that one of my friends helped put together. The National Lampoon cut was a pretty good find as well – Brian Doyle-Murray, his brother Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, and National Frelling Lampoon, people! These things also seem to take on a life of their own – going back through them I definitely see themes going through them besides the ones I try to put in myself.

I am also getting a big pile of songs that are not family friendly enough for inclusion in the mega mixxes. One might almost think of them as anti-Christmas songs – and not the cutesy kind like Christmas Prison (from 2011’s mix). Adult themes and not-nice christmas wishes and other stuff I don’t even want to get into – but fantastic music from wondrous musical groupings. I was thinking I might put something together. Maybe even later this year…

I have also done something this year that I have never done before, and I have woven at least two themes into this year’s Mega Mixx. I will be giving out prizes this year to the first people who correctly suss out either of these two mysteries. Aren’t you supposed to give away stuff for Christmas?

Ahead Of The Curve For Once

Sunday, 30 Wintring

Well it seems that I have managed to get a few things done a little bit ahead of schedule, and I am wondering how to deal with the situation. Especially being bipolar to an alarming extent and examining what it’s like to feel like you’ve actually finished something.

Which is to say that as soon as I can get a few more ducks in a row I will be putting this year’s Xmas Mega Mixx up – before Halloween! It was especially nice to be able to put a song in this year that was written and performed by a personal friend, and produced, mixed, and engineered by another in his recording studio. I am also realizing that besides that conscious xmas song grouping I have been delberately engaging in while making these mixes, there’s a lot of subconscious stuff being played out as well. I didn’t really notice the secondary theme running through this year’s selections until well after the jigsaw had been put together – and that’s all I’m saying for now except: there will be mathom distribution gifts – besides the gift of strange and wondrous yuletide music freely distributed – to be striven and fought for this year.

If you would like to check out any of the previous mixes, please email me and I will supply you with the details you need to access what is currently available.

Oh yes I am also grooving on a nice start to the Habs season, but now I have to worry about crying like a Leafs fan in April if anything goes wrong again – so it’s more of a mellow groove at this point in time. With the starting up of the NBA and Cubbies and Indians in the World Series there are an awful lot of good distracting sporting activities going on these days. Hope you get your fill – or conversely have enough other things to distract you that the sports cornucopia doesn’t get in your way. Otherwise get ready for some scary trick or treaters in your neighborhood, slow down, and take it easy.

Merry Merry and Happy Happy

Friday, 28 Conclusion 2015

Hey, kids! It’s that time of the year once again, where I wade through a metric Cheneyton of holiday dren kimchi collections of atonal pseudo-musical notes occasionally approaching coherence awesome tuneage to provide you with the best (cough) in non-traditional non-superstition based holiday musical montages. As always huge props to the master, DJ Riko for showing me the way – please go over to his site and check out his fine 2015 offering.

Here’s the track list for the 2015 Xmas MegaMixx:

Christmas Jug Band – Somebody Stole My Santa Claus Suit
Meiko – Maybe Next Year
Hugh Jackman wishes you Happy Holidays
Amy Winehouse – I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus
Voices of Soul – Someday at Christmas
First Aid Kit – Blue Christmas
Rosie Thomas – Why Can’t It Be Christmas All Year Round
Cheech and Chong – Santa Claus and His Old Lady
Garfunkel and Oates – Present Face
Microsoft commercial (unknown artists) – Spread Peace
The NOW Sound of Christmas intro
Margo Gunyan – I Don’t Intend To spend Christmas Without You
Gruff Rhys – Post Apocalypse Christmas
Holly Cole – I’d Like To Hitch a Ride With Santa Claus
The Beach Boys – Christmas Day

KT Tunstall – Sleigh Ride
Piney Girl – Every Day’s A Holiday
Saturday’s Children – Christmas Sounds
Howard Scott Pearlman – The Santa Clause Rock
Wham! – Last Christmas
the Js with Jamie – Cool Yule

It was interesting to find the original version(s) of Baby, It’s Cold Outside while trying to find versions where the male is being pressured to stay, and find that the original was setup with that gag built in. Also the irony of Ricardo Montalban having to convince Esther Williams to stay while Betty Garrett was having to convince Red Skelton* (!) in a similar fashion suggests to me that previous generations were pretty frelling hip and froody.

Ho Ho Ho

Saturday, 18 Conclusion 2014

It’s that time of year again – DJ Riko has released his annual Merry Mixmas set for 2014. As always there is lots of christmas music that I can pretty much guarantee you probably haven’t been hearing on the all-christmas, all-the-time radio stations that you are already sick of.

On a related note, there are the beginnings of the 2014 MegaMixx formulating in my brainpan . I think that sometime in next year’s MegaMixx I will finally be using more than one song from any given artist*. Also too alternate versions of the same song might be getting into the mix at some point in the future. Because at this point I am almost feeling straight-jacketed by the self-imposed rules I started this project out with in 2010 about using only one version of any given holiday song and using only one song from any given artist.

I also have remastered, remixed, and redone all of my previous mixes using vastly improved source material, quality-wise. I consider it to be roughly analogous to using recordings from AM radio and recording them on cassette and then re-recording things using Music recorded from FM radio and recording them with a PC. I will be posting links to them soon…

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some funky christmas music to finish listening to. I have already been inspired by this years’ mix to find a half dozen new (to me) christmas albums – and I still have at least fifteen minutes to go…

Share and Enjoy!

* – and, of course, stretching this rule to include unique artist configurations and unique versions of a song** as their own entity instead of crossing off lots of good musicians all at once…

** – as an example, I have already done a couple of interpretations of a couple of christmas songs that I consider to be unique enough to be different songs.

The Treefall And The Damage Done

Humpday, 6 Falltring 2014

All of the results aren’t in yet, but hopefully* the tree will be removed and a tarp put over the farking big hole in my roof before the rain starts (it looks like it aill be starting any time now). They were remarking how calm I was yesterday and how well I was taking the whole situation – and now I’m wondering if they decided I needed to be stressed a bit more about things and thought they could help ratchet it up a bit if they took my money and then didn’t show up to do the job.

Anyways,… here’s a few of the pics I have taken of the scene so far:

Happy Labor Day!

* – we are currently into the day late and dollar short part of the programme whereby the company that took my deposit for the work to be done yesterday is now two hours late from their supposed start time today.

Last minute update 10 AM – just called the tree removal company – they told me that they couldn’t get a crew in for the holiday so they’ve scheduled their people to come in tomorrow morning first thing. And for now they are getting somebody to come over with a tarp and throw it over everything for tonight. Rain rain go away and come again some other day…

And There Was Much More Rejoicing In The Land…

Thursday, 22 Conclusion 2013

… for, lo, another holiday tradition is celebrated, as Your Humble Narrator has assembled a wonderful collection of awesome music for the season once more. Go on over to the link, right-click it, and save the mp3 – you’ll be glad you did!

Perhaps you might have have checked out our previous two offerings already, but this is going to be an ongoing project for as long as I can keep on finding more new holiday tuneage to put together.

So, here’s the gory details from this year’s Xmas Mega Mixx:

Xmas Mega Mixx 2013

New Found Glory-Nothing For Christmas
Matt Wertz-Snow Globe
Brighten ft the Maine-Merry Christmas Baby
Clapton Crow All Stars-Merry Christmas Baby
Donny Hathaway-This Christmas
Sugarcult-Freezing
NOFX-Xmas Has Been X’ed
Train-Shake Up Christmas
Thorso All Stars-The Final Christmas Song
The Ramones-Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want To Fight Anymore)
Weird Al Yankovic-Christmas At Ground Zero
Relient K-The 12 Days of Christmas
The Wombats-Is This Christmas?
Sufjan Stevens-Christmas In The Room
Kenny Vance and the Planotones-Mr. Santa
Dorothy Collins-Mr. Santa
JD McPherson-Twinkle
Trey Songz and Flo Rida-Jingle Bells
Mayer Hawthorne-Christmas Time Is Here
Jonathan Coulton and John Roderick-Uncle John
You, Me, and Everyone We Know-We’ve Got Diggin’ Out To Do
The Rescues-Everything’s Gonna Be Better Next Year
Kristin Chenoweth-The Christmas Waltz

So now that’s over three hours of holiday music from the Funny Farm Ancient Recording Trove that I can almost guarantee that you won’t hear much of anywhere else.

There are a number of interesting quirks about this year’s selections. I found the original songs with the same names as the long time christmas classics first, and then back filled with one original (Mr. Santa) and one cover (Merry Christmas Baby). I find it quite buzzy that Riko and I both grabbed something from Sufjan Stevens – from completely different sources, I’m guessing – completely independently, this year. I also find it really funky that a lot of the artists in this year’s collection are from right around here in southeastern Michigan. And I really wanted to use the Zooey Deschanel / M. Ward (She and Him) version of The Christmas Waltz, but I really don’t like the ending on any recording of their version of the song that I can find on YouTube, and the Kristin Chenoweth version was one of the least lushly orchestrated versions I can find other than the She and Him one. I was actually hoping to find something from Nora Jones this year as well. But Zooey and F. have a whole album of christmas music to choose from and I’m sure I’ll run into something from Nora one of these years…

Share and Enjoy!

During the Great Internets Website Wipeout of 2013, a lot of archival content from the Funny Farm’s old host site was not brought forward to the new one; as a result much of the archival content you might be able to find at the wayback Machine for the Funny Farm may be hosed eventually, depending on the requirements and generosity of a lot of people out there* – but for now you can still see most of the bloggy goodness that was there for so long. If you had saved some of the content (pics, video links, etc.) you would still be able to access it today.

One of the things that you haven’t been able to find, until now, has been the Xmas Mega Mixxes that were put together by Your Humble Narrator in years gone by. But, now, I’m going to put them back into general consumption once more:
