Mayday: A Review of Ryan Reynolds' and Kenneth Branagh's Chemistry in a Derivative but Diverting Apple TV Action-Comedy
In the realm of action-comedy buddy movies, Mayday feels like a throwback to the 1980s, a time when such films regularly dominated multiplexes. Today, these movies often find their home on streaming platforms, and Mayday is no exception, available on Apple TV. The film's producers, including David Ellison, may have had a hand in this decision, as the project seems to have been conceived before Ellison's newfound focus on theatrical releases.
Ryan Reynolds takes on the role of Troy Kelly, a naval pilot with a comical nickname, 'Assassin'. During a secret spy mission, Troy's plane encounters a critical situation, forcing him to eject and find himself stranded behind enemy lines in Soviet Russia. It's a classic setup, but Mayday adds a twist with its unique setting and characters.
The film introduces us to Nikolai Ustinov, played by the talented Kenneth Branagh, who reveals himself as a former KGB agent with a penchant for American culture. Branagh's performance is a standout, showcasing his deadpan comedy skills and a surprising affinity for playing Russians, following his roles in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit and Tenet. Despite its formulaic elements, Mayday is a fun and entertaining film, thanks to the chemistry between Reynolds and Branagh. Their mismatched buddy dynamic is a source of humor and keeps the audience engaged. The film hints at a potential sequel, imagining the two embarking on a road trip through America, which would be a delightful continuation.
